I am a Deputy Dean and the Louis D. Brandeis Professor of Law at Harvard Law School. I am especially interested in property law, land use, local government law, American legal history, intellectual property law, and water law. My articles have been published or are forthcoming in the\u00a0Harvard Law Review<\/em>,\u00a0Yale Law Journal<\/em>,\u00a0Virginia Law Review<\/em>,\u00a0University of Pennsylvania Law Review Online<\/em>, and the\u00a0Cardozo Law Review<\/em>. In 2019, I was the winner of the\u00a0AALS Scholarly Papers Prize<\/a>\u00a0for junior faculty, and in 2020, I received the American Society for Legal History’s\u00a0Cromwell Article Prize<\/a>\u00a0for the best paper in American legal history by an early-career scholar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Previously, I taught at the University of Virginia School of Law, where I received the 2019 UVA Student Council Distinguished Teaching Award, the 2018 Z Society Distinguished Faculty Award for \u201cone outstanding member of the University\u2019s faculty who has positively impacted the student body,\u201d and an invitation to the Seven Society 27th Annual Monticello Dinner Series for \u201cexemplary scholarship and transformative instruction of students.\u201d I also received the HLS Student Government’s Teaching & Advising Award in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I received an A.B. summa cum laude<\/em> in History from Harvard College and a J.D. from Yale Law School, where I was the two-time recipient of the Parker Prize for legal history scholarship and was awarded the Quintin Johnstone Prize in Real Property Law, the Jewell Prize (for an outstanding contribution to a secondary Yale Law School journal), and the Cullen Prize (for the best paper written by a first-year student). During law school, I served as co-editor-in-chief of the Yale Journal of Law and Technology<\/a> and was a Coker Fellow in Contract Law. I also served as a clerk to Judge Bruce M. Selya on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit and practiced at Ropes & Gray LLP in Boston as a corporate associate focusing on intellectual property transactions. After leaving practice, I was in the first graduating class of the Ph.D. in Law<\/a> program at Yale University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
